Where hidden salt and sugar come from

Bread, cheese, processed meats, sauces, instant noodles, crisps and ready meals carry much of the salt we eat. Soft drinks, juices, sweetened yoghurts, cereals and sweets are major sources of sugar.

What are ultra-processed foods?

These are industrial products made mostly from refined ingredients and additives, such as packaged snacks, sugary cereals and instant meals. Studies link high intake with obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

How to cut back

Cook at home with herbs, lemon and spices instead of extra salt. Rinse canned vegetables and legumes. Choose plain yoghurt and add fruit. Compare labels and pick the product with less salt and sugar per 100 g.
